Reiki History
Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui, who was looking for a way of knowing one's life's purpose and how to be content, despite all his extensive research he could not find a way to achieve this state. A monks advice prompted him to go to mount Kurama, a holy mountain near Kyoto the former capital of Japan described as the spiritual heart of the country, and carry out a 21 day meditation/fast. During his meditation he experienced an enlightenment or "satori" that led to the development of reiki.
Usui's system didnt come to him in a flash of inspiration but a system that was rooted in many exisitng traditions. Such as Buddhism and Shintoism. Tendai Buddhism (a form of mystical Buddhism) provided spiritual teachings and Shintoism controlling and working with the energies.
He had a strong background in Kiko (Energy Cultivation) and a martial art with a strong zen flavour and he also took zen training, these studies may have contributed in some way to the system that he developed.
Usui was a very well known and popular healer and he taught nearly 2,000 students all ove Japan. All his students started out being treated by him.
